Jeff Gunter of the State of Nevada said on April 9 that “Susie Lee works for herself. I’ll work for Nevada” as he campaigns for the Republican nomination in Nevada’s third congressional district. Gunter’s statement enters the discussion on congressional representation and policy priorities as candidates position themselves ahead of the primary election in the district.

The race in Nevada’s third congressional district has drawn attention due to its competitive nature and diverse economy, with candidates focusing on issues important to local voters. The district includes portions of the Las Vegas metropolitan area and has been a focus of attention in recent election cycles.

Gunter criticized incumbent Susie Lee, saying, “Susie Lee voted against no tax on tips and no tax on Social Security. Then she made $3 million on shady stock trades.” According to Gunter, these actions reflect Lee’s priorities compared to his own campaign platform.

Nevada has one of the highest percentages of tipped workers in the country. According to data from the Nevada Resort Association, the hospitality industry supports more than 436,000 jobs statewide, with many positions relying on tip income as a primary source of earnings. The service sector forms a cornerstone of the Las Vegas economy and surrounding communities, where proposals to eliminate taxes on tips have drawn strong interest from local workers and business owners, according to The Nevada Independent.

Congressional stock trading has come under greater review in recent sessions. Legislation introduced in the House would restrict lawmakers, their spouses, and dependent children from purchasing or selling publicly traded stocks while in office. Reports continue to document financial transactions by members of Congress and their families that have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest in legislative decision-making, according to information from Chairman Steil’s office.

Gunter previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Iceland. A dermatologist by training, he founded SummitMD Dermatology with multiple clinic locations and has practiced medicine for decades. Gunter is a Nevada resident who has been active in advancing America First policies through public service and his current campaign efforts, according to Ballotpedia.
