UNLV redshirt senior outfielder Nin Burns II was named the final Mountain West Player of the Week, according to a May 18 announcement from the conference. This is Burns II’s first weekly honor this season and marks the second such recognition for UNLV.
The award comes after Burns II helped UNLV win two out of three games against regular season champions San Diego State, securing the No. 6 seed at the Mountain West Championship. Over those games, he batted .583 with seven hits in twelve at-bats, including two home runs, one double, four runs batted in, fourteen total bases and four runs scored. He also posted a slugging percentage of 1.167 and an on-base percentage of .583.
In Thursday’s series opener against San Diego State, Burns II went one-for-three with a single. In game two, he had a two-for-four performance that included his ninth home run of the season and another single. The series finale saw him go four-for-five with three runs batted in, hitting his tenth home run along with a double and two singles; he finished just a triple short of hitting for the cycle.
Looking ahead, UNLV will travel to Mesa, Arizona for the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Baseball Championship starting Thursday, May 21. The Rebels enter as the No. 6 seed and are set to face No. 3 seed Air Force in their opening play-in game.
