The 1 October Memorial Committee performed community outreach by participating in First Friday on Sept. 2.
The event is held on the first Friday of every month in downtown Las Vegas to support local arts and culture, according to a news release from Clark County. Committee members attended the event in order to receive feedback from residents, tourists, and local artists concerning the memorial.
“First Friday is a great opportunity to meet with the public and encourage participation in our efforts to create a permanent 1 October memorial in our community,” Tennille Pereira, committee chairwoman, said in the news release. “From the earliest days following this tragedy [the attack at the Route 91 festival on Oct. 1, 2017], people have used creativity to express love, hope, sorrow, and support in a multitude of ways, and we welcome as many forms of those expressions as possible because they will help shape the eventual memorial that gets built.”
The committee set up shop within the Free Arts Tent at the Arts Factory at Charleston Boulevard and Casino Center Drive, the news release noted. Members answered questions related to the memorial.
Submissions of ideas for the memorial, or any form of artistic expression that may help inspire design teams, can include artwork, poetry, videos, and other artistic mediums. Anyone interested in submitting their work can do so by visiting the Clark County website.
Rebecca Holden, public art project manager for the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs, and Harold Bradford, an area artist, represented the committee at the First Friday event.
