Marty O’Donnell, a Republican candidate for Congress in Nevada’s 3rd District, said on May 7 that Nevada’s higher gas prices are due to its reliance on California for energy supply and criticized California’s green energy policies.
O’Donnell made the remarks in a post on X, saying, “The one and only reason that Nevada’s gas prices are higher than the national average is because we rely on California for our energy supply. A state committed to the insane green energy policies that Susie Lee wants for America.”
As of May 11, 2026, Nevada’s average price for regular gasoline was $5.24 per gallon, compared with the national average of $4.52 per gallon. California’s average price was even higher at $6.158 per gallon, according to data compiled by AAA.
Roughly 88% of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel consumed in Nevada comes from California refineries. Gov. Joe Lombardo has raised concerns that changes in California refinery and emissions policies could affect Nevada’s fuel availability, pricing, and economic stability, according to The Nevada Independent.
O’Donnell is a former video game music composer and audio designer best known for his work on the Halo and Destiny video games. According to his campaign website, he has been endorsed by President Donald Trump and is running as a Republican candidate for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District.
