As the start of winter approaches, Clark County officials are advising citizens on how to prepare for colder temperatures.
Area residents can expect freezing temperatures soon, as winter officially begins on Dec. 21, according to a news release shared by the county.
“Freezing temperatures in southern Nevada can take people by surprise this time of year,” Billy Samuels, Clark County deputy fire chief, said in the news release. Samuels oversees the Clark County Office of Emergency Management.
Residents are urged to go to the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov to view the weather forecast for southern Nevada.
Plants can be damaged and pipes can freeze and burst when the temperature reaches 32 degrees or lower, the news release noted. Officials at the Building Department of Clark County warn people to winterize their homes and pools to avoid maintenance issues. The fire department posted cold weather safety tips on the county’s website.
“Keep any flammable items at least three feet away from heating equipment such as furnaces, fireplaces, or portable space heaters,” Samuels said. “If you are traveling to the mountains or a remote area, have an emergency kit in your car that includes water, extra food and blankets, and items such as an ice scraper, tire chains, and jumper cables.”
