The Southern Nevada Health District made an announcement on Tuesday stating that the first known case of the omicron variant in Nevada has been found in Clark County.
“We can help protect ourselves from variants of the COVID-19 virus by getting fully vaccinated and getting a booster when they are eligible, wearing a mask in public indoor settings, and staying home and getting tested if we are sick,” tweeted Gov. Steve Sisolak.
The first known case of the new omicron variant of COVID-19 was detected in Clark County by the Southern Nevada Health District on Dec. 14.
“The omicron variant in Nevada is a reminder to all those who have not completed their COVID-19 vaccination series, that vaccination can protect against serious illness,” state epidemiologist Melissa Peek-Bullock said, KTNV reported.
The woman who tested positive is fully vaccinated; she is in her mid-20s. She had not received a vaccine booster shot.
“We knew that it was only a matter of time that we would identify the omicron variant in Southern Nevada,” Dr. Fermin Leguen, district health officer for the Southern Nevada Health District, said according to KTNV.
