Tuesday night during a special meeting of City Council, dozens of people packed City Hall to see new Boulder City Mayor Joe Hardy accept the Oath of Office from his son, Judge Joe Hardy. New Council Members Steve Walton and Cokie Booth accepted their Oaths of Office from City Clerk Tami McKay. Mayor Hardy previously served as a Boulder City Council Member from 1999-2002, and as a Nevada State Assemblyman and Senator. Both Council Members Walton and Booth served on the Boulder City Planning Commission in recent years.
The first order of business was to appoint Council Members to local, regional and State Boards and Committees. “I’ve had several iterations on how to do this in such a way that we maximize the good influence in the greater Las Vegas and Boulder City Area,” said Mayor Hardy. “I realize that we need every single person on the Council participating, doing, and not only in the same boat but rowing in the same direction.”
The Council voted to appoint Mayor Hardy (who will be retiring at the end of the year from his role as Associate Dean of Clinical Education at Touro University Nevada’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, but will remain there in an Adjunct capacity) to serve on the Southern Nevada Health District Board. He will also serve on the Civilian Military Council, the Regional Transportation Commission/Regional Flood Control District Boards, and the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance.
Council voted unanimously to appoint Council Member Sherri Jorgensen as Mayor pro tempore; the role performs the duties of the Mayor during the absence or disability of the Mayor. She will continue her roles on the Boulder City Audit Review Committee and Boulder City Community Education Advisory Board, the Clark County School Oversight Panel for School Facilities and joins the Clark County Debt Management Commission.
Incumbent Council Member and Boulder City business owner Matt Fox was selected to serve on the Nevada League of Cities Board of Directors and the Workforce Connections Local Elected Officials (LEO) Consortium Committee.
Council Member Steve Walton, a retired Division Fire Chief (Henderson) and one-time interim Fire Chief (Boulder City), will serve on the board of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority (LVCVA), and as Nevada League of Cities Legislative Committee Alternate.
Council Member Cokie Booth, who is a business owner in Boulder City, was selected to serve alongside Mayor pro tem Jorgensen on the Audit Review Committee, on the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition and on the Nevada Public Agency Insurance Pool Board of Directors/Public Compensation Trust (known as POOL/PACT).
