Pet Memorial Site Considered in Boulder City

Boulder City staff is seeking thoughts from the community regarding a pet memorial. City Council recently considered a proposal to purchase either a pet columbarium or ossuarium. These memorial sites differ in that a columbarium holds urns of each pet’s ashes in a separate niche, while the ossuary holds the cremains in a soft urn within the large vault.

The idea comes after decades of people taking their deceased pets to the conservation easement for burial. City Council directed staff to do more research on the ossuary, which comes pre-assembled, provides space for 425 pet cremains and has a memorial band to engrave the names of the pets.

The vault prices range from $40,000 to $100,000. Boulder City would also be responsible for constructing the base, renting a crane to set the unit, and maintenance of the site in perpetuity.

City Council also requested public input to determine if residents had interest in such a memorial site and how much they would pay for an internment. Take the survey at www.bcnv.org/petmemorial through December 31, 2022.
