Congresswoman Susie Lee, who represents Nevada’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, has used her social media accounts to address the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on her constituents. In a series of posts from October 3 and 4, Lee highlighted her office’s continued operations during the shutdown and criticized House Republicans for their role in the impasse.
On October 3, Lee wrote: “While House Republicans left the negotiating table, my office has been OPEN during their government shutdown. Need help with a federal agency or want to voice a concern? Call or message my office today.”
The following day, she provided an update after engaging directly with constituents: “It’s day 3 of Republicans’ government shutdown. I just finished a telephone town hall with 4,600 of my constituents who wanted to know what’s happening in D.C. Republicans in Congress need to come to the table to protect health care for Americans and end this government” (October 4).
Later that same day, Lee addressed concerns about rising health care costs and policy decisions made by congressional Republicans: “This is what we are fighting for: between rising premiums and Republican politicians taking away ACA tax credits, families could see their health costs go up approximately $450 a month. Republicans in Washington shut down the government after giving permanent, HUGE tax breaks to” (October 4).
Susie Lee has served as the representative for Nevada’s 3rd district since replacing Jacky Rosen in 2019. She was born in Canton, Ohio in 1966 and currently resides in Las Vegas. Lee holds a bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
The recent posts reflect ongoing tensions within Congress regarding budget negotiations and health care policy as well as efforts by lawmakers like Lee to communicate directly with their constituents during periods of federal disruption.
