The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels baseball team will close out its regular season at home with a three-game series against the San Diego State Aztecs beginning Thursday, May 14 and concluding Saturday, May 16. The first two games are scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. start, with the finale set for 12:05 p.m.
This series marks the end of the regular season for UNLV and is significant as both teams look to solidify their positions before postseason play. Last week, UNLV won two out of three games against Fresno State. Jonny Rodriguez stood out by going 7-for-17 at bat with five home runs and thirteen runs batted in during the series. He became the first Rebel since Xavier Scruggs in April 2008 to hit three home runs in a single game.
Fans attending this week’s games can receive free Hustlin’ Rebels T-shirts while supplies last, and high school students or younger with valid Nevada identification will be admitted free of charge. Those unable to attend can follow live stats and video through links on UNLVRebels.com or via social media channels.
The Rebels’ roster features a large group of newcomers this year—25 transfers and one freshman—with several making immediate contributions both offensively and defensively throughout the season. Marcos Rosales has appeared in all contests so far, while other key players such as Nin Burns II, Drew Barragan, Ayden Garcia, Reggie Bussey, Gavin Taylor, Parker Dillhoff, Felix Ong, Yates Bland, Ryan Marton and Josh Donegan have also played important roles.
San Diego State comes into the matchup led by Jabin Trosky with multiple hits in twenty-two games this season; Tyce Peterson leads in RBIs (43), while Jake Jackson tops the team with thirteen home runs. Junior pitcher Rohan Lettow is expected to start Friday’s opener boasting a record of five wins against one loss and an earned run average of 3.67.
Looking ahead to next year’s schedule, UNLV plans to play fifty-five regular-season games including thirty-two at home—one being held at Las Vegas Ballpark—and thirty nonconference matchups across ten different leagues.
