The University of Nevada, Las Vegas softball team won 4-2 against the University of Nevada, Reno in game two of their Mountain West series on May 1 at Eller Media Stadium. The matchup is part of the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union.
This result matters as it helps UNLV (30-20, 17-7) strengthen its position in conference play and secure another important series victory over its in-state rival UNR (37-16, 16-8).
Mantha Hatzenbeller led the offense for UNLV with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. She finished the day going one-for-two with three runs batted in and a walk. Diamond Sefe also contributed by going one-for-three, while Keyannah Chavez and Charelle Aki each drew two walks. Bri Williams and Presley Barnes both recorded hits for UNLV. Lauren Fettic earned her fourteenth win this season after pitching six innings without allowing a walk and striking out two batters. Yanina Sherwood picked up her second save.
The first two innings remained scoreless until Chavez walked to lead off the third for UNLV. After advancing runners through an error and a sacrifice bunt from Aki, Barnes hit an RBI single to open scoring. Hatzenbeller then hit her home run to give the Rebels a four-run lead. The Wolf Pack responded with solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings but could not close the gap further as Sherwood retired all three batters she faced in the seventh.
Additional notes include Chavez extending her on-base streak to twenty-one games, Sefe reaching base for seventeen consecutive games, while Hatzenbeller and Williams have each reached base seven straight times.
The Rebels will finish their regular season against UNR on Saturday, May 2 at Eller Media Stadium. After that game concludes, UNLV plans to honor its six seniors: Keyannah Chavez, Maddie Scott, Diamond Sefe, Natalie Turner, Amelia Weber and Bri Williams.
