The UNLV women’s golf team had two players finish in the top 10 after the opening round of the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional on May 11. The event took place at the University of Michigan Golf Course, which plays as a par-71 over 6,260 yards.
This result is important for UNLV as it positions key players well for advancement and keeps the team within reach of a top-five finish, which could be significant for their postseason prospects.
Sophomore Amber Chen led the Rebels with a score of three-under-par 68, tying her for third place and just two shots off the individual lead. Junior Zi Yu Foong followed closely behind with a two-under-par 69, placing her in a tie for sixth. Together, Chen and Foong played par or better on a combined total of 33 holes during Monday’s round. Foong managed to play her first fifteen holes without a bogey and finished with only one bogey overall, while Chen played sixteen holes at par or better.
Freshman Demi Du also contributed by finishing tied for twenty-seventh at two-over-par after starting strong with eleven consecutive holes at par or better. Freshman Lana Yamagata ended day one in sixty-first place (+10), while junior Jane Huang was tied for sixty-second (+11).
In team standings after day one, Northwestern and Ohio State shared the lead at five-under-par. USC held third place at three-under-par, Duke was fourth (+2), and UCF fifth (+3). UNLV finished seventh with a total score of seven-over-par but remained within four shots of UCF’s fifth-place position.
The Rebels are scheduled to begin Tuesday’s second round early in the morning as they continue their pursuit of moving up into qualifying spots.
