Democrat Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered flags to be flown half-staff to honor the victims of Sept. 11 on the 20th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
“It is with solemn honor we lower the flags out of respect for all of those that lost their lives twenty years ago on September 11, 2001," Sisolak said in a Sept. 10 press release from his office. "It is also a day to remember all of those courageous first responders that sacrificed and risked so much to ensure many more lives were saved.”
Nevada lowers its flags every year on Sept. 11 as a way of honoring and paying tribute to the victims, according to the press release.
Congress designated Sept. 11 as “Patriot Day” on Dec. 18, 2001, according to the press release.
The city of Reno held a ceremony Sept. 11 at the Reno City Plaza to commemorate the victims, My News 4 reported.
This year marked the 20th anniversary of the fatal attack.
“I know many Nevadans will join me in reflecting on that day — we can all so vividly remember what we were doing at the time," Sisolak said, My News 4 reported. "I was helping my girls get ready for school when we saw the news on the television. As a nation, we grieved together, found strength in one another and found ways to move forward together.”
