People who were near Reno City Plaza on March 1 witnessed a movement where large letters were decorated with sunflowers, and yellow and blue signs abounded as citizens showed support for Ukraine.
Reno city officials expressed their gratitude for the public backing of Ukraine, the former Soviet republic that gained independence in 1991 and is now under attack by Russia, KOLO reported.
"Thank you to everyone who came out to City Plaza to help decorate the BELIEVE sign with sunflowers to show solidarity with Ukraine,’’ the city of Reno tweeted recently.
The sign letters were tall and constructed of a material that contained plenty of holes that sunflowers could be pushed through. The sunflower is Ukraine’s national flower and has come to symbolize support for the people there who are under fire, missile and artillery attack.
The event drew ordinary people from all parts of Reno and the surrounding area, as well as politicians like Mayor Hilary Schieve, KOLO said.
Folks who have Ukrainian roots or family ties also thanked the supporters. One with a heritage ties to both Ukraine and Russia described her former countrymen as “bleeding and split in half,” KOLO reported.
