The City of Henderson will commence the next phase of turf removal at Anthem Hills Park on Monday, as part of its ongoing efforts to conserve water and comply with AB 356. The project involves removing approximately 17,000 square feet of decorative turf, which is expected to result in annual water savings of nearly 780,000 gallons.
Upon completion in 2026, the project aims to achieve substantial conservation milestones:
- Nearly 150 million gallons of water saved annually
- More than 2 million square feet of decorative grass removed
- An additional 2 million square feet of turf converted to drought-tolerant grass
- Addition of 34 new trees (with the removal of 13)
The City has reported significant progress in its turf removal and conversion projects so far:
- Identification of 51 parks for turf removal; completion in 11 parks
- Removal of 287,013 square feet of turf, equivalent to five football fields
- Savings of nearly 59 million gallons of water
- Receipt of more than $1 million in rebates
- Addition of 292 trees (with the removal of 166)
The City’s H2One initiative underscores Henderson's commitment to reducing water usage. Last year saw a citywide saving of one billion gallons more than in 2022. Specifically, city parks conserved 162 million gallons last year, over six times the amount saved in the previous year.
All turf removal and conversion projects are designed with residents' interests in mind, ensuring that visitors to Henderson parks continue to enjoy green spaces while promoting sustainability. These initiatives align with the City's broader strategic priority for a Healthy, Livable, and Sustainable City aimed at protecting natural resources for future generations.
