Clark County received a grant to provide free swimming lessons to toddlers, according to a release from the county.
The funds from are from the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council, the release said.
"Drowning is a year-round concern in southern Nevada, especially among young children,” Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick said. “We appreciate this grant from the Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council because it allows us to offer free swimming lessons to families that may not be able to afford them.”
The chapter will give away $17,500 to seven local entities to offer swimming lessons to children 4 and younger, the release said. Clark County is accepting $2,500 along with other support recipients including the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite and the Southern Nevada Drowning Prevention Coalition.
Kirkpatrick and the Department of Parks and Recreation will receive the contribution from the chapter at a Board of County Commissioners meeting, the release said.
Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death among Clark County children under 4, according to the Southern Nevada Health District, the release said. In 2021, there were 21 submersion incidents in southern Nevada and 81% were among children under 4.
